Fade

I have began exploring film as a creative medium rather than just something to capture a moment while out and about. Seeing Rebecca Norris Webb and Ralph Eugene Meatyard work has opened up a whole other realm of photographic possibilities.

All the shots are from the same roll of Kodak Ultramax 400. The last shot is the first time I have tried using film for long exposure work. I used an app as a lightmeter which thankfully worked out. I love how film creates  such unpredictable colours and effects.

One Fine Day

I red somewhere that going for a walk in nature mentally relieves us from the stress of work. Pairing that with the desire to shoot more film during my lunch hours, I started to take the Canonet with me to Kings Park as it walking distance from my work place.  The park which is apparently the biggest park in a metropolitan area at 1,003-acre, compared  to Central Park in New York City at 778 acres. However its peripheral location from the City disconnects it and a freeway further isolates it from the City unlike Central Park which is very much part of the New York City experience.

Although most of it is just bush on my side of the park (the monuments, views and restaurants are on the either side) I was drawn to some large trees that have been damaged by bush fire. There are probably more interesting finds if I go off track, but is currently not allowed to let the vegetation’s recover.

Grass recovery was in progress at some point which I found amusing.

On another note, I have began the culling my work on the flickr account. So far I have culled 150+ photos but there is so much more to go. The goal is to have 12 max photos per my previous years of shooting, ie. a photo a month constraint and 4 photos per month, or a photo per week post. Perhaps even limiting the posts to purely street work.

How disciplined I am on the posting regime is a whole different story. I have already posted two entries this week on the blog when I wanted to post one a month. It is in hope to get a much more critical objective view of the work, to sit with it for sometime. Rebecca Norris Webb speaks about letting the work speak to her, trusting that her work is much smarter than her own logic. Letting intuition be the guide. I found this very much intriguing. Perhaps most photogs dream, but wouldn’t be nice to be a fine art photographer. Hopefully one fine day.

Roll 13: Lucky Super 200

More beach images on this new roll. The local beaches in Olongapo City where I grew up used to be so beautiful when I was a kid, now they are polluted with garbage.  It is quite disheartening. I wish things turned around in the Philippines but sadly things will just get worse. The recent floods deemed the worse in Olongapo’s history is now claiming more lives because of leptospirosis, a water bourne disease caused by the urine of rats. It wouldn’t be so bad however the hospitals cannot handle the influx of people. Serious aide needs to be done by the Filipino government before a full outbreak occurs.

I was going for a stroll around my suburb. I have photographed underneath this bridge before but had never gone to the otherside of it. I decided to check it out and noticed some ripples on the water. At first I thought it was a man swimming towards the shore so I got my camera ready.

But it was even better.
It turned out to be a dolphin!
It was a pretty awesome experience. I couldn’t believe my luck and it even swam towards me. I almost went into the water lol. Just goes to show to always have a camera with you because you never know what you will encounter. I would say it is one of the most joyful experiences I have had and it was completely unexpected! You can see its dorsal fin in the middle. I was lucky to catch the boat beyond aswell.

Early morning sun. Voting time

Taken during the polls for local voting early this year in WA. Australia is about to have our federal elections this September 7. It has been pretty interesting, almost soap drama like. The labour government came into power with Kevin Rudd as the Prime Minister, he was then axed and our very first woman PM took over, Julia Gillard. Alot of people were pretty pissed off this occurred. Anyway recently there was another revolt and Kevin Rudd was again placed by the labour to be Prime Minister.

I thought these two magpies seemed interested in the open house next door.  Maybe they wont swoop and scare people during nesting season. Traumatised me as a kid!

Interesting Film related discovery (BUSTED: Forensic police do not use 35mm film)

Today I was in the shopping mall when I spotted a forensic police working near a jewellery store. I thought to myself how perfect! What are the chances of a forensic police showing up near my blog post. Now I do not need to ask friends if they know anyone who works as a police lol.

I hesitated initially but eventually decided to ask him. I waited until he finished and asked about what camera they use and if its true that it must be film. Low and behold he tells me “Everything is digital these days” 😦 Not sure why but the image isnt showing underneath. Click to see the scene snapped with good old iphone 🙂

The camera of choice he shows me is the Nikon D300s. It also had a flash on it, although located to the side of the camera.

Of course I had to then ask this “digital age” old question

Do you shoot RAW OR JPG?

The answer was Jpg.  He further explains that the courts in Australia look at the Metadata of the image. I guess there is a standard and If anything unusual or funny is about it wont be accepted and is deemed tampered.  The Nikon D300s seems to fulfil this need and was the popular choice at this point in time. I can see alot of the nikon fan boys smiling now.

It felt great getting the answer from a forensic police officer in person. Ended up investigating without really trying to which was exciting. However it does sadden me that film is really becoming pushed to the periphery. I feel as lovers of this great medium, we should try and bring it back to mainstream rather than merely preserving it.
